As you consider staying at a private island, you need to make sure the facility has the infrastructure and is maintained to support your needs. You do not want surprises. Our caretaker lives on site all year long. We spend 4 – 6 months a year on Lobster Cay. We do our best to be on top of things. As you think about staying at a private island consider:
How is the Island Powered?
Power is supplied by:
- A 3 plus mile underwater power line from mainland Eleuthera
- A 60 KW backup diesel generator in its own concrete building
- Whole Cay Surge Protector plus an invaluable Ashley Edison voltage stabilizer to ameliorate dips and surges in power from BPL to protect sensitive electronics and appliances
- Power outlets throughout the Cay
How are biting insects controlled?
In the years we have owned Lobster Cay, we have yet to be bitten by mosquitos or no-see-ums (sandflies). Enjoy the early morning or evening hours outside without the use of bug sprays, citronella tiki torches or need to fumigate. Feel free to open windows and doors. For those of you familiar with the Caribbean or US Southeast coast, you know how unique a feature this is.
How is the water supplied?
The Bahamas islands (including Eleuthera) rely on government desalinated water. Lots of issues on Eleuthera with outages and pressure. In addition, very few drink the desalinated water. All of our water is captured rain water. We have plenty of tanks and a lot of roof area to capture rain. Use it, but do not waste it. No issues for cooking, showering, dishwashing and toilets. Boiled water is used for drinking and ice making.
- 35,000 gallons of water tanks
- Backup water pumps
- Backup reverse osmosis unit
- Outside showers
- Outside spigots
- Marina water spigots
Is boat transportation available?
We have a 27 foot Word Cat and 26 foot Glacier Bay (both smooth riding power catamarans). We can also arrange for any specific boating needs with captains from the Bluff or Spanish Wells. Bottom line is that, if you need water transportation, we have the capability or it can be arranged.
Is land transportation available?
We do have a small car on the mainland and may be able to provide transportation for food or fluid runs on mainland Eleuthera. However, if you need to explore mainland Eleuthera or Harbour Island for the day, you will need to hire a car service or rent a car. Just coordinate with us so we can get you back to Lobster before dark.

- Lobster Cay has concrete paths throughout the island. This allows easy and safe access around the Cay.
- Solar path lighting to show you the way during the evening. But we recommend using a flashlight as well.
- Composite decking around Coral Cottage, Coconut Grove Cabana, Hanger and Sea Lodge.
- Coral Cottage deck solar lighting.
- Rope LED lighting in Courtyard and Coconut Grove Cabana.

How is the landscaping maintained?
We have taken extreme measures to remove invasive species (casuarina trees, sea lettuce, and other invasive plants). Replacing them with native species or just letting nature take its course. Neat but natural. Do not expect manicured lawns.
The result is lots of birds taking up residence on Lobster (White Crown pigeons, Night Hawks, Doves, Plovers). We also have a pair of Osprey on Lobster. Plenty of hermit crabs and lizards. The Sea Grape and Coconut trees are producing more fruit than ever before. Must be doing something right.
